Was on EV71 tonight - I encourage anyone who believes Alexander Dennis make top notch bodies to go on this bus. For a vehicle to be battered, making the noises it is and to be falling to pieces the way it is after less than two and a half years s is quite simply disgraceful. (See Obs section for the full list of faults)
With reference to the AW's these are the same body (Eclipse Fusion) as the VWL's (Standard Eclipse) apart from thy are just the articulated version. Without being able to compare them to another type of artic in Dublin we cannot for sure know how well or poorly these vehicles were built. The fact that the bus is basically in two parts, means that you would expect the body to wear a little bit more as there is more stress on the parts, particularly when going over ramps or bumpy roads etc.
I heard but I do not know if it is true, that when Wrights were building the VG's Dublin Bus sent them one of the EV's or AV's to say this is what they like in a bus. If that was the case it is absolutely ridiculous. It is like buying a Mercedes Benz and then sending up to BMW and telling them, hey can you make me a vehicle that is similar to a Mercedes Benz. As I've stated before, Dublin Bus seem to have it in their head that the AV/AX Model is gold, hence why they even asked for AX's to be built despite the fact the model was discontinued. Therefore they spec'd the Enviros as close as possible to the older ALX400's and even the VG's have seem to have been partly spec'd with these vehicles in mind (Look at the cab, the door type, use of orange stopping signs etc, the pattern on the floor even!). Thankfully we retained the much better opening windows, straight staircase and the better heating system from the normal Gemini.
Unfortunately it dates back quite a while now, and I honestly believe that Dublin Bus spec their vehicles to what they see as being beneficial to the company and what those in the technical department favour. The spec of the vehicles being the way it is does not seem to be aligned to attract new passengers to the service. There IS a perception problem with traveling by bus. Whatever your thoughts are bench vs bucket seats and bonded vs gasket, the fact is in a lot of peoples eyes especially the ones who do not get the bus, a lot of them tried it years ago and did not like it. Dublin bus is losing passengers and needs to attract new ones. A bonded glazed VG with nice welcoming seats and a more plush on-board experience such as those on the Lothian vehicles might tempt people back.
I'm not Lothian's biggest fan by any streech of the imagination, but what I do know is they are very good at specifying vehicles, and marketing their product, and are streets ahead of Dublin Bus in that regard. It is time to move on, and get with the fact it's 2011, unfortunately it seems that the spec of the DB vehicles is still stuck in what was good 11 years ago. Whilst the privates such as First and Stagecoach may not come up to DB standards in other areas, they do generally spec much more suitable vehicles than their DB counterparts
