Another great speech Jim, i agree with the majority of everything you've said.
Can i just ask you, you said you recently traveled to Dundalk on a 04 reg SC, would it be a 01 SC? Because Dundalk don't have any 04 SC's, apart from SC71 which is usually in either Monaghan or Cavan, they did have SC70 & SC72 but that is going back 3 or 4 years ago, maybe more. Dundalk have SC9 which finds itself on the 100X quite a bit if one of their VG's is off the road. Actually both SC2 & SC3 spent a few days over the last month or so in Dundalk, at separate situations, perhaps it was one of these? SC9 is probably what it was, or would it have been an SR? Just asking out of curiosity thats all. Yes those new SC's do have that system where you have to wait until the door is fully sealed before the bus will take off (there are at least 3 of them which i know will pull away once you let the handbrake off but it will close as you pull away, which still strains the door, but apart from those 3 or 4 the rest of them all have to wait for the entrance door to be fully closed before the bus will move). That said i still can't understand why the door will not seal properly, the bottom part of it seals and the upper part sticks out a bit, or else the upper part seals perfectly while the bottom part does not due to a gap/hole between the corner of the bottom step not sucking in the door close enough, thus meaning that the door is, more or less, wrecked, or strained, and its a shame but many of the drivers will not put in a docket for it because they are all driving different buses every few days, unless ofcourse as well all know, if one man drives the same bus all the time it will be so much better looked after. Take SC274 in Drogheda for example, i know it only goes out the road to Ardee and might go to Dublin at the weekend but thats it, the same man drives it on the Ardee route all the time and it is easily the best SC that there is, its in fantastic shape. SC213 & SC221 are also both driven by the same men on the Drogheda to Navan route, and although they are both looked after quite well, some of the seats near the back of SC213 are ripped open and full of graffiti, while the door on SC221 doesn't seal properly at the top. Its little things like that, the one man with the same bus, which makes all the difference.
On the issue of radio's, that "LOC" button has 3 settings (well i know on the SP's & LD's radio's it does, also the 04 reg SC's) when you press the LOC button you are given 3 options, Local, Distance and Manual. Local and Distance are exactly what you said, getting the stations in your area, while Manual allows you to go through the system and keep it on a station that you like. But as i said, the radio's fitted to the SP's will either not let you do that, or if it does then it will not hold the station, as if you press the AF button to press the AF to the ON position then you loose the station again, because the buttons are all mixed up, you could press one button and you are either greeted with "No cd/cc", or "AM Frequency", or "Bass 0", or "TA OFF", however if you were to press the button which gives you TA or AM frequency or the CC/CD button, you would get something completely different, so its just down to some fancy looking radio's but with terrible control systems, not doing "what it says on the tin". I am great with radio's and know how to operate them, and yes i do know that some drivers only have a basic knowledge of them, but i find that the majority of them know how to operate the heating/Air conditioning/Demister systems, this would be more of a need of safety issue than having a radio. Ulsterbus for example do not have radio's in them at all, and if some of them do have them then Ulsterbus cut the wires connected to the back. I think thats awful. If you are doing 3 or 4 or 5 hour trips, and returning home again, you could not live without any type of music, or if not music then a chat show or something, something to make the journey run more pleasantly. Thats just my opinion. I am afraid to put any CD's into the radio system of the SP's incase it doesn't come back! No problem with the one's fitted to the LD's, which are exactly the same except that when you press a certain button on the radio fitted to the LD's then you get what you asked for, do that on an SP and you get something completely different
