I don't think the 9 litre Scania is up to the job, back in the days when the B10M was dominant in the fleet on the VCs and VPs, nobody realised just how underpowered the 9 litre Scanias were because the B10M is very underpowered as well(about the only thing the B10M is not good at) and probably even more underpowered than the SC, but the VC300 has come and bad and all as that is, it is very fast compared to these, I will never forget the night I travelled back from Killarney to Cork, VP306 left Killarney a good 10 minutes beforehand to go back to Cork light, but by Ballyvourney we had overtook it and left it for dead, the B12B could go up hills at 80 km/h(and more) no problem, something the B10M couldn't do even on the best of days.
The VGs and SPs came after that and to be honest that has set the standards that we have come to expect. Remember that there are a lot more motorways now and buses can now do 100 km/h so the added power is an even bigger advantage.
It's not just the Irizar PB that suffers from body issues, the Inter Centuries and Centuries all suffer from bodywork that is not robust enough for BÉ services.
Seats that don't adjust, holes where there are meant to be speakers, rattles, bodywork that is in serious need of TLC(to be fair to the 01 SCs they have been allocated to garages that aren't the best for maintenance anyway for all of their working lives), I was up in Sligo recently and the 01 SCs look derelict, they look like they have been to the moon and back.
The Irizars are lovely when new and in fairness they do a lot of things well, I'm not trying to go Irizar bashing because they do have a lot of strengths, great seats, low noise, good legroom, well designed interior, good HVAC and the SPs look like they are a top class coach, some might say they are an excess of the Celtic Tiger days but I disagree, a good SP is one of the nicest coaches to travel in this side of a Setra or 9700 with all the fancy options, but they are just not robust enough for the intense operating conditions BÉ subject them to.
Plaxtons were robust, VanHool is known for quality, the Berkhoff body on the LCs is impressively rattle free, it's just a pity it is such an old fashioned looking coach and has one of the worst seats I've ever had the misfortune to sit on.
Surely there is the equivalent to the original VC on sale, a no nonsesne, comfortable coach that never stops working and has a cabin that is still 100% rattle free even after 1 million kms?
