SC279, SR48 - 239, SR48's paint job is quite poor, I really hate the way how the company logos are a hybrid of the old and new one, the dog is the new one but the font is from the old livery, it just looks all wrong
VWL135 - 261
SC225 - light past Merchant's Quay, finally has the new ticket machine!
SL1 - out of service on the South Mall (~1600)
I had the "pleasure" of travelling on LC207 today. I was all looking forward to being back in Cork for the first time in three months and this is my reward
! Like all LCs it's absolute junk, rock hard seats and rock hard suspension. In fairness, though, it is well suited to something like the 226 (well the 226A part anyway), you're not going to be stuck on it for long enough for the backache to set in courtesy of the seats
. I don't know where this notion that the LCs are more solid inside than Irizars comes from, this is certainly not the first time I've been on a rattly LC, and as we all know, I don't travel on the LCs very often because I hate them! The rattles are easily as bad as anything an Irizar bodied coach does. The LED was not working either. It has 598,000 km on the clock, not bad for a commuter coach I suppose. I thought about letting it pass by, but I didn't fancy waiting another 30 minutes at the Airport with all my belongings in the hope that a better bus might turn up. As it turned out, if I had waited another 30 minutes I would have got LC206 on the 226A, so definitely the right decision not to wait!
I haven't been in Cork in over three months, and my God a LOT has changed since the last time I was home. I have to say, the new layout of Parnell Place is not as bad as I feared, and thank goodness the buses can just turn right onto Lower Oliver Plunkett Street from Clontarf Street, that makes things easier. It is certainly strange to see buses laying over on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street! I'd love to know what they're busy doing with the South Mall/Parnell Place junction, though, and I really don't like the massive reduction in the number of lanes along Parnell Place - parts of it had four lanes now they've only got two. Similarly with the South Mall coming up onto Parnell Place, this is not going to work well in the long run.
I also was on SL21, it rattles a lot but is otherwise a very good bus. Nobody bothered with the Leap Card, still all cash payments.
Loadings on the 226 are really excellent, we were full after the Airport business park. I was on the 1500 ex-Kinsale. Timings are dreadful, 10 minutes late already when the bus turned up at the airport and that didn't improve going into town. The 226A was also struggling for time, I saw it only coming into the airport at 1550 (it was on the 1530 ex-Kent Station) and it still had to traverse the Business Park etc. Someone did use a Leap Card incidentally.
This is certainly a route that needs both a revised timetable and a frequency increase. And before anyone says it, no it does not need either the LDs already in Broadstone or the new decker coaches, as it's an airport route a lot of luggage is carried and we all know that luggage space is certainly not a strength of the LDs.
